Many companies focus on cost reduction of product, rather than value optimisation of the system over its lifetime. Maintenance costs are considerable on plant, even more so if they are forced by reliability issues. Reduced maintenance change by routine inspection and longer life cycles are key. It is also important to consider the running regimes of most thermal generation on the UK grid, as it looks to provide peaking, balancing and intermittent power; resulting in higher cycling demand and stress to the rotating and static heat critical equipment.
